Homes For Hummingbirds

They’re on the way here right now. Little wonderbirds that helicopter around at wing speeds of 60 beats per second.

Hummingbirds need one thing in massive quantities: sugar. They burn through  sugar so fast that they can easily starve if they don’t manage their fuel appropriately, or have to travel too far from their nest for it.

They have a special metabolism that allows them to burn fructose from plants directly, without having to convert it to glucose like most animals.

They enjoy tubular, colorful flowers that are easy to see and hover through. Native and wildflowers are ideal because hey produce much more nectar than hybrids.

You can invite them to set up a nest year your yard by offering them a wide variety of flowers they can feed from.

So if you are interested in attracting and supporting these awesome creatures, here are some great plants they like:

  • Bee balm
  • Mimosa
  • Butterfly weed
  • Lantana
  • Salvia
  • Trumpet vine
  • Coral bells
  • Wisteria

Ruby-throated hummingbirds should be arriving soon from Central America. Keep an eye out for these flittering around looking for nectar.
