Spring 2022 Landscape Trends

Spring is finally here, and you’ve probably noticed the trees and shrubs bursting with beautiful flowers and greenery.   Just like the seasons, spring garden and planting trends tend to come and go.

This spring, we are observing some of the new planting trends this year and want to provide guidance to navigate you through some of it.  2020 and 2021 have influenced consumer behavior, and our attention has turned to transforming our outside space into extensions of our homes.

Here are some of the most popular trends for spring gardening in 2022:

  • Front garden focus – lockdowns and COVID restrictions have left people craving connections, so it is predicted that there will be a renewed focus on front gardens and porches.  This space can offer fresh hair and an opportunity to catch up with neighbors.
  • Outdoor living/cooking – our outdoor spaces offer an escape from the cabin fever that we all experienced in 2020 and 2021, but now that we can gather with family and friends again, expect to see outdoor fire pits with comfortable seating and a renewed interest in outdoor kitchens or smokers.
  • Pocket gardening and small space gardening – living walls and having a small garden on a balcony are creative ways of making the most of a smaller space.  Stacked pockets can also be filled with overflowing vegetation to make a lush display.
  • Outdoor office space – experts believe that a high percentage of workers will continue to be working remotely, or move to permanent remote status in the future.  If you don’t have the office space to sacrifice indoors, constructing an outdoor office space may be the answer to your needs.
  • Artisanal ceramics – materials that are natural, artisan and practical at the same time are making a comeback – for example, terra cotta is an eco-friendly choice that has seen a surge in popularity lately due to unique craftsmanship.
  • Wellbeing features – with mental health rising to the top of many priority lists, there may be an increase in stress-busting and healing features added to our outdoor spaces, such as soothing color palettes, fragrant herbs like lavender, and installations of saunas and hot tubs.
  • Seasonal planting – a renewed interest in gardening comes with the desire to have them be usable year-round, which can involve adding a variety of plants that flourish in all seasons.  Many people have also added features that can make outdoor spaces or gardens usable during cooler temperatures, such as heating, firepits, and lighting.
  • Homegrown fruits and veggies – with grocery prices rising, many people are returning to establishing a garden patch and growing their own vegetables and fruits.  You can even start small with a simple kitchen herb garden.
